Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to welcome you and your child to Marrero Academy for Advanced Studies. I hope that we can work together to make Pre-K a successful and enjoyable experience for your child. During the year, your child will be exposed to a variety of experiences with books and language. He/she will also work in various learning centers such as Math, Listening, Writing, Reading, Science, Art, Blocks, Puzzles, Housekeeping, Computer and Dramatic Play. The following are some of the policies/procedures used in my class.

HOMEWORK—A weekly homework sheet will be sent home each Monday in your child’s folder. Homework will be assigned for Monday through Thursday. In order to foster literacy, I ask that you read to your child daily. A monthly book log will be sent home for you to record these daily readings. Please return these signed book logs at the end of each month so that your child can pick a prize from my prize box.

SIGHT WORDS-- Each week the students will learn several sight words. Please go over these words with your child. Help them to look for these words in print. This will help them become more familiar with the words. Periodically, I will send home sight word flashcards for you to cut apart and use at home. Also, in early October we will begin having weekly sight word bees.

DISCIPLINE—I feel that good classroom discipline is an important and necessary tool used to ensure a wholesome teaching environment so that the learning process can take place. We are striving to develop in our pre-K students the importance of kindness and love for one another, respect for self and others, and social and academic achievement. This can be accomplished by developing a set of classroom rules and consequences that will occur when these rules are broken.

  1. I will keep my hands and my feet to myself.

  2. I will listen and speak softly.

  3. I will walk in school.

  4. I will take care of our classroom things.

  5. I will be respectful to others.

When rules are broken, the following progressive discipline practices will be used:

  1. Verbal reminder from teacher. (Green Apple)

  2. Time out for 4 minutes. (Green Apple)

  3. Apple falls midway down the tree. (Yellow Apple)

  4. Apple falls all the way down from the tree. ( Red Apple)

  5. Phone call to parent.


Each child has an apple on the Good Apple Tree. Students whose apples remain on the top of the tree for the entire day will receive apple stamps on their hands at the end of the day to show how well they behaved in school that day. Please look at your child’s hand everyday for his/her apple stamp. If you do not see the stamp, this is an indication that your child had some behavior problems during the day. Your child’s daily behavior will also be recorded using a green, yellow or red apple on the snack calendar in your child’s folder. A green apple indicates that all rules were followed. A yellow apple indicates that your child had some difficulties with following the rules, and a red apple indicates that your child experienced considerable difficulty following the rules. A numbered explanation chart will be used to convey the reason(s) your child’s apple fell. If a child’s apple falls three times in one week, a behavior report will be issued. Behavior reports may also be issued for more serious misconduct when warranted. A Golden apple can also be achieved for excellent behavior.

SNACKS—In my class, I use a monthly snack calendar. Please look for your child’s name on this calendar each month and supply the class with healthy snacks for that day. Please make sure that you send enough for all of the students. We have 20 students in our class. The day before it is your child’s turn to bring snack, I will send home a snack bag to remind you that it is your turn. If your child is absent on his/her snack day, please still bring snack to school for the other children. TRANSPORTATION-- In order to ensure the safe arrival and departure of your child, I will provide a nametag for your child to wear for the beginning of school. When the children receive their permanent name tags, I will collect the temporary ones. If you know in advance of a change in the dismissal routine for your child, you must send me a note signed, dated and written in ink. If an emergency arises and you must change the method of P.M. dismissal, you must send an email to me, the school secretary and the principal. Requests to change P.M. dismissal routines should occur before 2:00 P.M. whenever possible.

MONEY—Any money sent to school needs to be in an envelope and labeled with your child’s name, the amount of money, and what the money is to be used for. It is also helpful if you send the correct change, as I usually don’t have change for large bills in the classroom.

FOLDERS—It is necessary that you check your child’s folder daily and remove any notes or class work. Please use this folder to send notes; money, homework etc. back to school. I do not check the children’s book bags, but I do check the folders every morning. In addition, a green folder will be sent home on Tuesdays with important school information. Please look at what is sent in this green folder and return the folder back to school the next day.

NAPTIME—State law mandates that all Pre-K students must rest for 78 minutes a day. The children do not have to sleep, but they must lie quietly. A small beach towel may be sent with the child’s name on it to be used at rest time. Beach towels will be sent home on Fridays for washing. No pillows are allowed.

PRE-K P.E. SCHEDULE—The children will go to P.E. daily from 10:55-11:40. This is my planning time and the best time to reach me if you have any questions or concerns.
